German-taught or English-taught?

German-taught programmes

The largest choice of programmes at German universities.

  • German at C1 level (e.g. TestDaF or DSH)

  • Often a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) first

English-taught programmes

A growing number of programmes, especially at Master's level.

  • Proof of English skills (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL)
  • Admission to a full English-taught programme
  • German for everyday life, part-time jobs and your career

Questions

Studying – FAQ

Which German level do I need to study in Germany?+

For German-taught programmes, universities usually require C1-level German, proven for example with TestDaF or DSH. For English-taught programmes, you need English skills instead – but German still helps a lot in everyday life and for jobs.

Is studying in Germany free?+

Most public universities charge no or low tuition fees, but you pay a semester contribution and need money for living costs. Some federal states charge fees for international students.

What do I need for a student visa?+

Usually an admission letter, proof that you can finance your living costs (for example a blocked account), health insurance and your certificates. Requirements are set by the German embassy in your country.
